The Pearsonian (product moment) correlation coefficient measures how strong the connection is between the two variables. When correlation is strong, the estimated line of best fit should be more reliable.
Interpretation:
r = +1 perfect positive linear correlation
r between 0 and +1, positive correlation
r = 0 no correlation
r between 0 and -1, negative correlation
r = -1 perfect negative linear correlation
